How to become a music director

Music video directors are the visionaries who create and direct videos for musical artists. A music video is a short film that is based on a song by a singer or band. Music video directors often work with these musical artists to come up with a concept and story behind the video.

They usually have to pitch their vision to the artist/band using a treatment showing all the shots and visual colours and locations they are thinking would be good to use. It is then the artist and their back up team who decide weather or not to use that director. Music directors have to understand the client’s needs and be good with cinematography, lighting and editing.
This highly demanding job is not always stable, as there’s often time between projects some times you get unlucky and have long periods of unemployment therefore when you do get a job its crucial you listen to your clients wishes putting your ego aside and delivering a good solid product that will help that artist/band get seen, as then you are likely to be recommended and asked for again.

The field is also extremely competitive therefore the type of career requirements you need would include some sort of degree in film, video production or a similar field. Several years of production experience if often needed or help people get jobs; therefore doing internships will help your chances of being seen. The key skills include artistic ability, leadership, good time management, and a solid level of skill with editing software and cameras that you will ultimately be shooting with.
