What is a storyboard?

A storyboard is a visual overview that people in the music industry use, during planning and designing their video, shot by shot.

The great thing about the storyboard is that it gives a clear outline of what is happening in each shot and using what angle. The idea is it helps explain the timing of a shot, the location of that shot and most importantly who is in that shot, using what camera angle.

The storyboards are so important in offering visual aids, so that everyone can be on the same page. In the music industry, they use storyboards so that the artist, the dancers, the camera, lighting and set designers as well as everyone in the crew knows what they are doing. It means you don’t waste time on shoot day worrying about what shots to do as you already have a clear outline of what needs doing and this means you can simply tick off the shots as you go, saving time and money.

The storyboard helps from pre-production all the way through to postproduction in editing. The editor can see what the director and his/her crew were hoping to create. Therefore we have created our own storyboard in an attempt to show what we are hoping to create in our video through different shots.
