Having cast and confirmed our singer, we
realised we needed to move forward, and begin to test the lighting on our
artist.
As a group we organised a time to meet with our artist and booked a
slot in the studio, where we could use the neon tubes already in there and test
the colour on her skin tone. Our main concern was that the fluorescent tubes
might not be visible on the black magic camera that we are shooting our video
with, so for obvious reasons we needed to do a trial run testing all these
queries out.

We had access to the sky blue and purple neon tubes, so used those and we found the lighting really complemented Nadia’s skin tone so we were happy that it would work with our colours, we now need to place an order as we can confirm it all looks good and will work.
Our main problem is with the black magic
camera, when we first tried to shoot the tubes on the camera, we just got zig
zag lines of the screen, we soon realised we need to adjust the exposure so the
singer can be seen as well as the lights.

However the problem was still there, so we spoke to Paul the light technician and he suggested we add extra light from above and behind the camera so it looks like the neon tubes are doing all the lighting, but in reality we will have it lit from around the room but out of the camera’s view. We held a white light over the artist and found we could instantly see her better as well as the neon tubes. We now know we just need more background light in order to create the effect we want.
